Bird Watching Tours India

If you are a bird enthusiast, India certainly features in your mind. India is, no doubt, a birders paradise, probably the only country in the world to have as varied and as rich a birdlife. Of the 10,000 species of birds found in the world, India harbours over 1300 of which 55 are endemic to India and 141 to this region. India is a refuge to 82 globally threatened, 16 critically endangered 16 endangered and 50 vulnerable species. More astonishingly out of 27 orders and 155 families of birds, 20 orders and 77 families are reported in India.

India’s richness in avifauna is largely attributed to varied climatic conditions due to altitudinal variation (from sea level to over twenty eight thousand feet) and diverse habitat. In fact India has all ecosystems to be found in the world – be it desert or rain forest, montane or coastal, grassland or marshland, scrub or mangrove, India has every possible bird habitat one could think of.

Though two species (Pink-headed Duck and Mountain Quail ) are assumed extinct now, the rediscovery of certain other species like Bugun Liocichila, Jerden’s Courser and Forest Owlet, almost after a century indicates that there are many missing chapters in India’s ornithology which are yet to be written.

Coming to the richness of avian life in India, even if you casually go around the city like Delhi for few hours, you will come back with a list of hundred birds. Delhi city and surroundings area boasts of over 400 bird spices which next to Nairobi the city that has the highest bird count.
