Golden Temple

Amritsar is situated in the north-western frontier of India. Apart from being a pilgrimage and a historic place, it is the nerve center of the rich and vibrant culture of Punjab and paradise of frontier cuisine. Founded by the fourth Guru of the Sikha “Guru Ram Das” in 1577 the city of Amritsar is marked by Golden Temple the holiest pilgrimage of Sikhs.

Convinced with the idea of creating a central place for worship for Sikhs Guru Arjan Sahib the Fifth Nanak got the foundation of Harmandir Sahib laid by a Muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mirji of Lahore. Completed in 1561 today the site now boasts of complex of shrines that are revered highly not just by the Sikh but people from all religions. The main buildings to be visited in the complex are Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple the main shrine where Guru Granth Sahib or the holy book of Sikh is installed, Akal Takath (Throne of Almighty) is from where all commandments that are of concern to the community as a whole were issued. Akal Takath also has a collection of weapons used by Sikh gurus and other heroes. Sikh Museum comprises a gallery of paintings telling the story of the Sikhs and their martyrs.
