Taj Mahal

Served as the capital for four of the greatest Mughal emperors, Agra otherwise is known more for its prized position as the Taj Mahal. Hitting the limelight during 1526 AD when Afghan King Sikandar Lodhi choose to made his capital here. City slowly evolved as a center for arts and culture, however, saw its golden days when Mughals took it over as their capital.

Taj Mahal (World Heritage Site)

This most beautiful monument of love was built during 1630 by grieving emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaj Mahal is flawless to its conception and execution. It is aptly said that the beauty of the Taj Mahal cannot be described in words – one has to see it to experience it.

Agra Fort

Four of the great Mughal emperors ruled their vast empire from here. The foundation this fort was led by emperor Akbar in 1565 AD, successive emperors added some part during their regime making it an architectural gem. Some of the famous architecture here are Jahangiri Mahal, Khass Mahal, Diwan-i-Khass, Diwan-i-Am, Machchhi Bhawan and Moti Masjid etc. that represents the excellence of Mughal architecture. Fort also commands a magnificent view of Taj Mahal and it is believed that emperor Shah Jahan spent his days in exile watching the Taj Mahal from here.

Itmad-ud-daulah Tomb

Built by Begam Nur Jahan wife of Jahangir, in the memory of her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg one of generals in Mughal army, who had been given the title of Itimâd-ud-Daula (pillar of the state). Primarily built from red sandstone with marble decorations, this monument also elegantly displays white marble and pietra dura inlay which is considered to be one of the fore runner of the Taj Mahal.

Sikandra

In a short distance (10 km) from Agra city is Sikandara located which boasts of the tomb of Emperor Akbar. Built in red sandstone this monument is a perfect example of fusion of Mughal and Hindu architecture.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri lies just 44 km away from Agra en route to Jaipur. It briefly served as capital of emperor Akbar – however, city was quickly abandoned, it is believed due to lack of potable water. Courtyards, Palaces, meeting halls in the complex is in a remarkable state of preservation. Complex also houses holy shrine of Saint Salim Chisti an important pilgrimage for Muslims and Buland Darwaza which emperor Akbar built to commemorate his victory on Gujarat is very imposing.
